Hi all. I am mom to a 7 year old female standard poodle who had a rear leg amputation 4 weeks ago and started chemo this past Tuesday. Her diagnosis was osteosarcoma. I am confused on where to start with supplements while she is on chemo. I am not sure if I can use Apocaps with chemo at the same time. She is on Carboplatin. I read Dr. Dressler's book and the section on Apocaps and I read a section that said it can actually help the chemo work better. But it only mentioned Cistoplantin and not Carboplatin. My oncologist said that she recommends that I wait until after chemo to start the supplements due to their possible antioxidant nature. Antioxidants can actually help cells, and right now we are trying to kill the bad cancer cells. Also she had recommended Omega-6, but then I read that you should not give Omega 6 to a dog with cancer, but rather Omega 3. I am so confused. It also looks like some people use Apocaps during chemo and some start after. I don't know the right thing to do but I want to get her started on something. She is doing very well with the chemo and eating and exercising, etc. Secondly she is on a special prescription dog food with hydrolized protein because she is allergic to regular proteins. I want to start her on a grain free , carb free diet, but I don't know if this is possible given her condition. If I try to feed her a high protein diet she might have a reaction (she licks her rear end, and crotch and gets ear infections). I don't want her to suffer with allergies as well as the cancer, but at the same time I don't want to feed the cancer with food that has grain. I would really appreciate some direction on this. Thank you!

You might want to stick with the recommendation of your oncologist. Apocaps is an immune system supplement similar to  K9 Immunity. Consider watching our video interview with Dr. Mona Rosenberg for her recommendations about not using immunity supplements during chemotherapy.

Keep in mind, we are not vets and have never used Apocaps . We can only speak from our experience with Jerry who got K9 Immunity and did not receive IV chemo. Please let us know what you find out.

I do not know anything about Apocaps but it is generally okay to use fish oil and mushroom supplements during chemo.  I would check with your oncologist just to be sure.

I read the same thing about antioxidants during chemo so I agree with admin on that one - wait.  I never heard Omega 6 being recommended so I agree with Pam on the fish oil, I don't think you can go wrong with fish oil.  Finally, I wouldn't mess with Cadence's diet right now, she has enough weird stuff going on.  Tate did great on chemo until halfway through and then he was sick as...well, a dog.  I know you're anxious to do as much as you can to help your girl...just love and enjoy her more for now.  That would be my advice but only you know what's best for Cadence.
